Part 42: “Prince Chiyaan" - Rise of the phoenix!

The stage was perfectly set for the one and only Superstar of the Tamil movie industry to address the gathering. The industry eagerly waits to hear the Superstar. Anxiety is even more since, it was the day; the King would announce the heir to his throne. Though there were lots to compete, people right from industry pundits to the common men on the streets had little doubt about who the next King would be.

Along with the huge round of applause Rajinikanth came to give his speech. Pin drop silence for a moment.

‘My Vanakkam to the Tamil when I revere as god. I was chatting with Vairamuthu at 5.30AM for night ago. My assistant interrupted me to say K.Balacandra is waiting to speak to you in phone. I called my assistant a stupid and asked him to connect him to K.Balachandar immediately.

The Director spoke to me in the phone he is coming to see me. I will come over to see you. For which the director said it’s all right. I will say what it is about over the phone. I am celebrating Saamy’s 100th day celebration this 24th. I want to you to participate and distribute the mementos and speak in the function. This is much at present for industries sake. I replied saying now a day I don’t participate in functions. For which the director said I am not different from others. My next word was the question when is the function? He said on 24th, ok I would attend.

This is how I respect Balachander Sir and everyone is aware to know he deserves it. Actually this is the only function I am attending after the release of Padaiyappa. Vijay kumar told me to watch the movie ‘Saamy’. I saw it.

The tempo is continues without any slack from the beginning till the end in the movie. I have done 150 movies but when Vikram was shown in the screen it was impossible to find out that he is a police officer. I thought oh my, even I haven’t done scenes till as he and is seen saying onnu sami, rendu sami, moonu sami , naalu sami, anju sami, aaru sami while climbing to seated in the car. I thought about what a round of applause from the audience would be given for Vikram’s breathless dialogue delivery lord Krishna has preached wherever there is unrest I shall appear in the Gita, likewise we can make the enemy to lose with our cleverness for the well being of ten or thousand people. That’s what they all cleverness.

Acting as a police officer Vikram is realistic and clever to average the villain who is a politician. I liked very much, when I said politician, its not all politicians, like wise, when I say police it’s a particularly those and for goondas it’s not all the goondas but certain goondas. I wonder how Hari handles this in the movie. How were this dialogues written?. He happens to be just a 32 or 33 years old. Either he must have read a lot or suffered, experienced a lot, nor must be genius. Hari is a genius in the movies climax if the villain is shared that’s it if let alive it must be said as enquires so he conveys that he is alive somewhere and burns him at least that was superb.

Vikram has become a star after striving a lot. I had Balachandar for me the beginning so I was made a super star without challenges. Vikram has strived for 10 to 11 years. He proved himself in Sethu 20% in Dhil 25% in Kaasi, 40% in Gemini, 60% in Dhool- in the movie Saami, he has captured to win 100% of the mass. Balachander used to say, to become a mass hero you have to get a good characters to have a reach with the mass, it takes a character like Annamalai, Muthu, Badsha and Padaiyappa. That’s the limit for an actor; Balachandar offered me such a character in the movie ‘Netrikkan’. Vikram too is doing the roles for mass reach. He has a good future.’

Major motivating factor being, Mr Rajnikanth feeling, ‘I wonder why I've never acted in a movie like this!’, at the 125th day of celebration of the Movie.

Rajini continues "The tag `Superstar' is just like any other post —Commissioner, Collector, DIG, Chief Minister, Prime Minister. It is limited for a specific period and then it expires. Like they say, Long live the king...', and another king will come. And who's a Superstar? Whoever wins the heart of the people, whoever makes sure that collections are good and whoever gives one hit after another.’

All this just pointed to one thing, ‘Vikram has arrived and he is here to stay and rule!’

But the Prince didn't think so, "One sun. One moon. One superstar.'' said Vikram and the auditorium went berserk and wild. Vikram said that he was fortunate to see his movies run over 100 days in various centres. One of the traits common, which I have noticed that day between Vikram and the Superstar himself was the humility. Humble to the extent that he goes on record, thanking director Bala for what he is today and crediting the director for all his successes. There aren't many people in the industry, who show such level of gratitude to their mentors. Perhaps another character in the mould of the Superstar!

That day I just realised the fact that after playing bit roles, being neglected, pushed around and labeled as a jinxed star, Vikram has made the most dramatic comeback in the history of Tamil movies.

It just left me with just one question,

‘Why did it take ten years to realise this wonderful talent?’
