Part 6: A dream combination built on someone’s dream’s cremation!

December 20th, 1999

It was almost 4 days after Shaakir’s death. That night once again I could not concentrate on anything. No other option. Only something where I could lose myself is music or writing, as both are such great arts. In fact life is greater than all art. Music is a unique object. It is born in the mind of the artist and crafted in to being his own hands. It is a manifestation of emotion, deeply felt and beautifully expressed. It affects our inner most senses. It makes us happy, reduces strife in our minds and fills us with peace. It inspires, elevates and motivates us, makes us feel better about ourselves.

I was not in a mood of writing anything. I just took my headphone out to listen to my favourite Song, of course it was a song ‘Uyire (Tu Hi re)’ from the movie Bombay. I don’t know why, I completely forget everything when I listen to this song. Such a nice song. So beautifully picturised.

I must say something about movie Bombay here, as it was the first Tamil movie I ever watched.

Interesting fact was even before Bombay released in its Hindi version it was Hum Apke Hai Koun, which ruled the countdown for a stunning 52 weeks at number one position. Even though I was not such movie buff I had liked that movie a lot and the songs. And when Bombay entered the countdown directly to the second position and within the next two weeks when it dethroned Hum Apke Hai Koun from its No.1 position I was so angry.. Sounds silly, isn’t it? But yeah I was little upset!

It was then I came to know about Bombay movie when my elder brother had brought the audio cassette before few weeks. He used to listen to those songs a lot. But frankly I did not like any songs when I heard it for the first time. You cannot blame me, as A.R.Rehman captures your mind little later. It takes its own time.

But yes, after few days I started to like the songs, especially Uyire(Tu hi re). The way Hari Haran sung that song, wow..! I was very keen to see the picturisation of that song. Normally before going to any movie I will listen to the songs and then will see the picturisation.

When I went to watch the movie I was just waiting for that song. I was very happy with the picturisation but when that song got over in the movie few people inside the theatre shouted saying, ‘Once more once more!’.

Very next to that voice one fellow shouted with his loud voice saying, ‘Stupid, keep quiet. I was just waiting for the song to get over and you are saying once more?’

Oh my god! The whole theatre started to laugh out loud. I could not control my laughter as well, laughed a lot. But yes, it was Bombay movie because of which I started to watch Tamil movies as well. Even though many people had told me about Roja movie, I did not watch that movie. Later I watched it.

The way Mani Rathnam brought the movie Bombay to the audience was fantastic. Manisha’s performance was mind blowing. It was only her who could beat Madhuri Dixit’s performance of Hum Apke Hai Koun.

Thus Bombay remained as my first Tamil movie, which turned my eyes down towards Kollywood(Tamil) movies!

I just could not imagine any other actor who could possibly suit the role, which Arvind Swamy played in the movie Bombay. May be I was wrong but he was good.

But at that moment I never knew that there was someone who was supposed to do that role and in spite being the most talented actor he was struggling in his cinema career to strike gold!

It was Bombay, which made A.R.Rehman as one among my favorite music director’s list.

But at that moment I never knew that it was this same movie Bombay, which had put someone’s life in a test!

It was Bombay, which made me a great fan of Mani Rathnam!

But at that moment I never knew that there was one person who felt like he has lost his half part due to one small decision of this same Mani Rathnam!

It was Bombay, which gave me one among my all time favourite song!

At that moment I never knew that it was this same song, which was very close to that person’s heart as well but mostly with a pain filled feeling!

When I was listening to the song I felt like the movie Bombay was truly a dream combination!

But at that moment I never knew that it was none other than this same movie Bombay, which was built on someone’s dream’s cremation!
